Claude AI Desktop App vs Browser – Getting the Most from Both By the end of this lesson, students should be able to: Two ways to use Claude – and why it matters which you choose. Claude is available as both a web application (accessed through a browser at claude.ai) and as a native desktop application that installs directly on your Mac or Windows computer. Most users start with the browser version because it requires nothing beyond opening a tab. The desktop app exists for users who want deeper integration with their computer and faster access throughout the day. This lesson covers getting the desktop app installed and running. Later lessons will explain what it does differently – for now, the goal is a working installation. Where to get the Claude desktop app. Download the Claude desktop app from Anthropic's official website. Do not download it from third-party app stores or unofficial sources – use only the download link provided at anthropic.com or from the Claude interface itself. The official download location may change as the product evolves; verify you are downloading from an Anthropic-controlled source before installing. As of mid-2026, the desktop app is available for: Verify current platform availability directly before attempting installation, as supported platforms expand over time. Installing on Mac. The Mac installation follows the standard macOS application installation process: After installation, Claude will appear in your Applications folder. You can add it to your Dock for quick access. Installing on Windows. The Windows installation follows a standard process: After installation, Claude will appear in your Start menu and, optionally, on your taskbar for quick access. Signing in. When you open the Claude desktop app for the first time, you will be prompted to sign in. Use the same account credentials you use for the Claude browser version. The desktop app and browser version share the same account – your conversations, Projects, and Custom Instructions carry across both. If you do not yet have a Claude account, you can create one during the sign-in process. Verifying the installation is working. After signing in, confirm the following: If any of these are missing, sign out and sign back in, or check Anthropic's current help documentation for troubleshooting guidance. The desktop app and your Claude subscription. The desktop app uses the same account and subscription tier as the browser version. If you have a paid Claude subscription, that access carries over to the desktop app automatically. You are not paying for two separate products – the desktop app is an alternative interface to the same Claude service. A project manager has been using Claude in her browser for three months. She decides to try the desktop app because she finds herself opening Claude dozens of times per day and wants faster access without hunting through open browser tabs. She downloads the desktop app from Anthropic's website, installs it, and signs in with the same email and password she uses at claude.ai. Her existing conversations, Projects, and Custom Instructions are all present – nothing was lost or duplicated. She pins the app to her taskbar for one-click access throughout the day. Her existing Claude workflow transfers to the desktop app with no setup required beyond the installation itself. After installing the desktop app, check whether your operating system allows you to set a system-wide keyboard shortcut to open it instantly from anywhere on your computer. On Mac, this can be configured in System Settings under Keyboard Shortcuts. On Windows, right-clicking the taskbar icon surfaces launch options, and some users assign a custom global hotkey through their keyboard software. A dedicated shortcut means Claude is one keypress away regardless of what application currently has focus – many desktop app users report this single habit change has more impact on their daily workflow than any other configuration. Only download the Claude desktop app from Anthropic's official website or through verified links in the Claude interface itself. Third-party download sites may offer modified versions that collect your credentials or intercept your conversations. If you are installing the desktop app on a shared or work-managed computer, confirm with your IT department that installing third-party applications is permitted and that there are no security or data-handling policy concerns specific to your organization. If you have not already done so, download and install the Claude desktop app on your computer. Verify your installation by completing these checks: (1) sign in with your existing Claude account, (2) confirm your Custom Instructions are present, (3) send a test message and confirm Claude responds normally, (4) note where the app appears in your operating system's application launcher. If you cannot install the desktop app on your current device, proceed to Lesson 3 to learn about the browser version – you can complete the course using the browser for all practice tasks. You should be able to locate, download, and install the Claude desktop app on Mac or Windows, sign in using your existing Claude account, and confirm that your existing settings and history are available in the desktop app. Log in and enroll to access lesson quizzes.
