Lesson Objectives

By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:

  • Use Grok's STAR format story development for behavioral interviews
  • Verify accuracy of all tailored content before submitting

Lesson Content

The three-input resume tailoring technique.

Generic resumes underperform. Tailored resumes that mirror the language of the job posting perform significantly better – especially in Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS):

"Task: Tailor my resume for this specific job. Input 1 – My experience: [paste your bullet points]. Input 2 – Job posting: [paste the full posting]. Input 3 – Company: [one or two sentences about the company]. Task: Revise my experience descriptions to highlight what is most relevant, use language from the posting where it genuinely applies to my experience, and identify the two or three most important qualifications I should emphasize."

The ATS keyword check.

"Compare my resume language to this job posting. What keywords from the posting do not appear in my resume? Which should I incorporate because they genuinely reflect my experience?"

Dual check: not just adding keywords, but surfacing genuine alignment that needs to be expressed.

Cover letter drafting with Grok's direct style.

"Draft a cover letter for this application. Experience: [key relevant points]. Role: [title and company]. Tone: direct and professional – not generic. Do not use phrases like 'I am passionate about' – give me specific, substantive content. Length: three focused paragraphs."

Grok's directness tends to produce more substantive cover letters than heavily hedged tools – but always edit for personal voice before submitting.

STAR format story development.

"Help me develop a STAR story from this experience: [describe your real experience]. The behavioral question is: 'Tell me about a time you [competency].' Be direct about whether this experience clearly demonstrates the competency. Make the Result section specific and quantifiable."

Critical accuracy reminder: Grok drafts based on what you provide. Only include genuine experiences and actual results – AI-assisted framing of real experience is appropriate; AI-generated fabricated achievements is resume fraud.
