Writing and Drafting with Meta AI

Lesson 3: Personal Voice and Pre-Submission Review

Lesson Objectives

By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:

  • Identify the markers of AI-generated prose
  • Apply the personal voice review to any AI-assisted draft
  • Use the pre-submission checklist for professional writing
  • Maintain appropriate voice while using AI assistance

Lesson Content

Why personal voice review is essential.

AI-generated prose has recognizable patterns – experienced readers can often identify it. More importantly: AI-generated prose sounds like AI, not like you. Communications that should sound personal, authentic, or distinctive (cover letters, personal statements, professional relationship-building emails) lose effectiveness when they sound generic.

Personal voice review is not optional – it is the final essential step for any AI-assisted communication.

The markers of AI-generated prose.

Learn to recognize these so you can edit them out:

  • Smooth but empty transitions: "Furthermore," "In addition," "This highlights"
  • Generic enthusiasm: "I am passionate about…" "I am excited to…"
  • Balanced-but-vague conclusions: "While there are pros and cons…"
  • Over-explanation: restating what was just said in slightly different words
  • Perfectly parallel structure: every bullet point structured identically
  • Unusual word choices that are technically correct but nobody actually writes that way

The read-aloud test.

Read the piece aloud. Where you stumble, pause, or feel like you would not say it that way – those are the places to edit.

The personal voice edit.

"I need to verify this AI-drafted text sounds like me and not like AI. I am going to paste text. Identify: (1) phrases that sound like AI filler, (2) transitions that add no meaning, (3) anything that sounds over-polished or generic rather than authentic, (4) sections where the argument is circular or restated unnecessarily."

Then personally edit each identified area.

The pre-submission checklist.

Before submitting any professionally important piece that used AI assistance:

  1. Every factual claim has been personally verified or is from your own direct knowledge
  2. No exaggerated or inaccurate representations of your own credentials, experience, or results
  3. The piece sounds like you – read aloud, no stumbles
  4. The opening gives the reader a reason to keep reading
  5. The closing gives the reader a clear takeaway or action
  6. Appropriate transparency: if the context requires disclosure of AI assistance, it is disclosed
