Safety, Privacy, and Responsible Use of Meta AI By the end of this lesson, students should be able to: The unique privacy context of Meta AI. Meta AI is embedded in WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger – apps many people use for deeply personal communication. The familiarity of these platforms can lower privacy guard. A conversational AI embedded in your messaging app feels personal and private – but conversations with Meta AI are part of Meta's data ecosystem, not private like a conversation with a family member. This familiarity is exactly why explicit privacy education matters for Meta AI specifically. Six categories – never share with Meta AI or any AI tool. 1. Government-issued identification: Social Security Numbers, passport numbers, driver's license numbers, taxpayer IDs. No AI conversation requires these. 2. Financial credentials and account details: Bank account numbers, credit card numbers, account passwords, PINs, routing numbers. Never enter these into any messaging or AI interface. 3. Private health information: Medical diagnoses, medications, treatment details, mental health information – for yourself or anyone else. Ask general health questions without identifying personal specifics. 4. Confidential organizational information: Proprietary business data, trade secrets, non-public financial information, personnel information, anything under NDA. Confidential information is confidential in all contexts – including WhatsApp conversations with Meta AI. 5. Login credentials and passwords: Your own or anyone else's. Never share credentials in any messaging or AI interface. 6. Information about others without their knowledge: Researching others through AI conversations using their private information raises serious ethical concerns and potential legal exposure. Never input another person's private details into AI tools. The platform-embedding risk. The risk unique to Meta AI: because it lives inside apps you use for personal communication, the boundary between "personal conversation with family" and "AI conversation logged in a commercial system" can blur. A WhatsApp group where someone says "let me ask Meta AI" may expose a group member's information to Meta AI without their knowledge or consent. Be aware of this boundary and apply the same privacy standards to Meta AI conversations as you would to any interaction with a commercial service. Indirect disclosure revisited. Sensitive information is often disclosed indirectly: The standard applies to the information content, not how explicitly it is stated. Log in and enroll to access lesson quizzes.
