What is a context window?

Every AI conversation operates within a context window – the amount of text the model can "see" at once. This includes your messages, Meta AI's previous responses, and any other information in the conversation. When a conversation exceeds the context window, earlier parts of the conversation are no longer visible to the model.

In practical terms: if you have a very long conversation, Meta AI may "forget" what was discussed at the beginning.

Context in platform-embedded conversations.

In WhatsApp, Instagram, or Messenger, conversations may persist over days or weeks. Meta AI does not necessarily have access to your full messaging history – it operates within each conversation's context window. Do not assume Meta AI remembers something from a conversation days ago unless you explicitly reference it.

What Meta AI knows vs. does not know about you.

Meta AI in platform apps does not automatically have access to all of your Meta platform data – your posts, photos, friend connections, etc. – unless specific features enable it. However, because Meta AI is operated by Meta Platforms, Inc., your interactions with Meta AI are part of Meta's broader data ecosystem. Structuring conversations effectively.

To work effectively within context window limits:

• Start conversations with relevant context rather than assuming Meta AI remembers it
• For complex topics, summarize key decisions or information at checkpoints
• If a conversation gets very long, start a fresh conversation and re-establish context at the top

The social platform context.

Meta AI exists within Meta's social ecosystem – an environment designed for personal connection and content sharing. This is distinct from dedicated productivity or research AI tools. Students should maintain awareness that the context of Meta AI use is a social platform – with corresponding data collection practices that differ from a standalone AI research tool.
