ChatGPT as a Writing and Drafting Assistant

Lesson 2: Layered Revision

Lesson Objectives

By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:

  • Apply three-layer revision in the correct sequence (content, structure, style)
  • Use targeted review prompts for each layer
  • Distinguish content improvement from sentence-level improvement
  • Recognize when revision is complete vs. diminishing returns

Lesson Content

Layer 1: Content review.

"Review this draft only for content – ignore style and sentence quality. Tell me: (1) Is every claim accurate? (2) Is anything important missing? (3) Is there anything that should not be there – tangents, irrelevant detail, or claims that weaken the central argument?"

Layer 2: Structure review.

"Now review for structure. Assume the content is correct. Does the document flow logically? Are transitions between sections clear? Should any sections be reordered? Is the most important point in the most prominent position?"

Layer 3: Style review.

"Now review for style only. Keep content and structure as-is. Identify: (1) sentences that are too long or tangled, (2) jargon to simplify, (3) passive voice that should be active, (4) redundant phrases, and (5) tone issues for this audience. Suggest specific changes – not just problems."

The correct sequence.

Content – Structure – Style. Reversing this wastes effort – style-polishing content that the content review would remove.

The revision-complete signal.

Revision reaches diminishing returns when changes are only stylistic preferences with no substantive impact. Stop when improvements are marginal.

Jamie Practice Lab

Before moving to the quiz, complete this short applied exercise:

  1. Write one realistic ChatGPT prompt that applies the main idea from Layered Revision to your own work, learning, or daily life.
  2. Add one safety or verification step you would take before acting on ChatGPT's response.
  3. Revise the prompt once to include clearer context, constraints, or success criteria.

Instructor check: A strong answer should show practical use, human review, and awareness that ChatGPT output is assistance – not automatic truth or professional advice.

Added Quiz Enhancement

question_id: auto-enhancement-layered-revision-qjamie001 question_type: short_answer difficulty: applied question: Write one prompt you could use after this lesson, then name one verification or human-review step you would apply before relying on the result. correct_answer: Answers will vary; a strong answer includes a clear task, relevant context, at least one constraint or desired format, and a realistic verification or human-review step based on the stakes of the task. answer_explanation: This applied question checks whether the student can transfer the lesson into real use while maintaining responsible AI habits.
