Safety, Privacy, and Responsible Use of ChatGPT

Lesson 2: OpenAI’s Data Practices and Your Privacy Controls

Lesson Objectives

By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:

  • Describe in general terms how OpenAI handles ChatGPT conversation data
  • Locate and configure ChatGPT privacy settings in their account
  • Explain the difference between personal ChatGPT accounts and organizational/API usage
  • Know where to find current authoritative information about OpenAI's privacy practices

Lesson Content

IMPORTANT: Privacy policy details described in this lesson reflect publicly available information as of the course creation date. OpenAI's privacy policies and product settings evolve. Always verify current practices at openai.com/privacy.

How OpenAI handles ChatGPT conversation data – the general picture.

Based on publicly available information, by default:

  • Conversation content with ChatGPT may be used to improve OpenAI's AI models
  • OpenAI employees and contractors may review conversations for safety, quality, and model improvement purposes
  • Chat history is saved to your account by default (and is accessible in your sidebar)

Your primary privacy controls.

Turn off model training data use: In ChatGPT Settings > Data Controls (or the current equivalent), you can opt out of having your conversations used to train OpenAI's models. OpenAI has described this option in their documentation – verify the current location in your account settings.

Turn off chat history: You can disable the saving of chat history. Conversations conducted with chat history off are still processed by OpenAI but are not saved to your account or used for training (verify current terms at openai.com).

Delete conversation history: You can delete individual conversations or all conversation history from your account settings.

Find all of these at: ChatGPT Settings > Data Controls (or the current equivalent navigation – OpenAI periodically updates the interface).

Personal accounts vs. API/Enterprise users.

Personal ChatGPT accounts: Subject to OpenAI's standard consumer privacy policy. Model training use by default (opt-out available).

ChatGPT Business / organizational workspaces: data controls differ from personal accounts. Verify current workspace terms directly with OpenAI.

ChatGPT Enterprise / Edu: designed for stronger organization-level administration, security, and data controls. Verify current retention and training-use terms directly with OpenAI.

API users: Applications built using OpenAI's API have their own data handling terms – the privacy experience of third-party apps using ChatGPT technology may differ from direct ChatGPT use.

Steps to protect your privacy.

  1. Review and configure your ChatGPT privacy settings: openai.com – Settings – Data Controls
  2. Opt out of model training data use if you prefer
  3. Enable or disable chat history based on your preference
  4. Anonymize sensitive content regardless of settings
  5. If governed by compliance regulations (HIPAA, GDPR), consult your compliance team before using ChatGPT with any regulated data

Jamie Practice Lab

Before moving to the quiz, complete this short applied exercise:

  1. Write one realistic ChatGPT prompt that applies the main idea from OpenAI's Data Practices and Your Privacy Controls to your own work, learning, or daily life.
  2. Add one safety or verification step you would take before acting on ChatGPT's response.
  3. Revise the prompt once to include clearer context, constraints, or success criteria.

Instructor check: A strong answer should show practical use, human review, and awareness that ChatGPT output is assistance – not automatic truth or professional advice.

Added Quiz Enhancement

question_id: auto-enhancement-openai-s-data-practices-and-your-privacy-controls-qjamie001 question_type: short_answer difficulty: applied question: Write one prompt you could use after this lesson, then name one verification or human-review step you would apply before relying on the result. correct_answer: Answers will vary; a strong answer includes a clear task, relevant context, at least one constraint or desired format, and a realistic verification or human-review step based on the stakes of the task. answer_explanation: This applied question checks whether the student can transfer the lesson into real use while maintaining responsible AI habits.
