Understanding ChatGPT – What It Is and How It Works

Lesson 1: What ChatGPT Is – and What It Is Not

Lesson Objectives

By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:

  • Define ChatGPT accurately in their own words
  • List at least four things ChatGPT is NOT
  • Explain why ChatGPT can produce wrong answers confidently
  • Connect accurate mental models to better usage decisions

Lesson Content

What ChatGPT is.

ChatGPT is an AI assistant developed by OpenAI, Inc. It is built on OpenAI's GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) large language model – a type of AI trained on vast amounts of text to understand and generate human language. ChatGPT interacts through conversation in natural language – you type or speak, it responds.

ChatGPT is useful because it can: write, analyze, explain, summarize, research, code, create, and reason – across almost any topic – in response to what you ask in natural language.

What ChatGPT is NOT.

These misconceptions cause the most problems for new users:

1. ChatGPT is NOT a search engine. Search engines retrieve information that exists on the web. ChatGPT generates responses based on patterns in its training data – it does not look things up in real time (without web search / browsing enabled). Its responses are generated, not retrieved. This is why it can produce convincing information that does not exist.

2. ChatGPT is NOT a database of facts. ChatGPT has no internal database of verified facts it looks up. It generates text that is statistically consistent with its training – sometimes that text is accurate, sometimes it is not. It cannot audit its own accuracy.

3. ChatGPT is NOT a licensed professional. ChatGPT is not a lawyer, doctor, financial advisor, therapist, accountant, or any other licensed professional. It can discuss topics in these domains – but the output is not professional advice and should never be treated as such without appropriate licensed review.

4. ChatGPT is NOT always current. ChatGPT's training data has a knowledge cutoff. It does not automatically know about events, publications, regulations, or market conditions after that cutoff. When web search / browsing (web access) is not enabled, ChatGPT cannot access current information.

5. ChatGPT is NOT infallible – and cannot tell you when it is wrong. This is the most important thing to internalize. ChatGPT generates plausible-sounding responses. When it is wrong, it typically does not know it is wrong and cannot flag the error. A confident, well-organized wrong answer looks the same as a confident, well-organized right answer.

6. ChatGPT is NOT private by default. Conversations with ChatGPT are processed by OpenAI's servers. OpenAI's default settings allow conversation data to be used for model training improvement (with opt-out available). Treat ChatGPT prompts as semi-public – do not include sensitive personal or confidential business information.

About OpenAI.

OpenAI, Inc. is the company that created and operates ChatGPT. It is a research and deployment company focused on developing AI that is safe and beneficial. OpenAI was founded in 2015 and has received significant investment from Microsoft Corporation, among others. OpenAI operates GPT models for its own products and also licenses API access to other businesses.

Jamie Practice Lab

Before moving to the quiz, complete this short applied exercise:

  1. Write one realistic ChatGPT prompt that applies the main idea from What ChatGPT Is – and What It Is Not to your own work, learning, or daily life.
  2. Add one safety or verification step you would take before acting on ChatGPT's response.
  3. Revise the prompt once to include clearer context, constraints, or success criteria.

Instructor check: A strong answer should show practical use, human review, and awareness that ChatGPT output is assistance – not automatic truth or professional advice.

Added Quiz Enhancement

question_id: auto-enhancement-what-chatgpt-is-and-what-it-is-not-qjamie001 question_type: short_answer difficulty: applied question: Write one prompt you could use after this lesson, then name one verification or human-review step you would apply before relying on the result. correct_answer: Answers will vary; a strong answer includes a clear task, relevant context, at least one constraint or desired format, and a realistic verification or human-review step based on the stakes of the task. answer_explanation: This applied question checks whether the student can transfer the lesson into real use while maintaining responsible AI habits.
