Getting Started with ChatGPT

Lesson 4: Five Everyday Tasks Where ChatGPT Delivers Immediate Value

Lesson Objectives

By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:

  • Identify the five task categories where ChatGPT is most immediately useful
  • Apply ChatGPT to at least one task in each category
  • Distinguish tasks well-suited to ChatGPT from tasks where caution is required
  • Build a personal "start here" list of ChatGPT use cases relevant to their own work

Lesson Content

Why a short list of immediate wins matters.

The fastest way to build a productive AI habit is to experience real value quickly. This lesson gives you five task categories where ChatGPT consistently delivers strong immediate results – giving you real reasons to return and continue building your skills.

Category 1 – Explaining and Learning.

ChatGPT excels at explaining concepts at exactly your level of knowledge. Unlike a search engine, you can have a dialogue:

  • "Explain [concept] in terms someone with a background in [your field] would understand"
  • "Give me an analogy to help me understand [topic]"
  • "I thought I understood [concept] but this part confuses me: [your confusion]. Help me figure out where I got lost."

*Immediate value*: Use ChatGPT before a meeting on an unfamiliar topic. Tell it you have 30 minutes and need to understand the essentials.

Category 2 – Writing First Drafts.

Blank page paralysis is one of the most common workplace time-wasters. ChatGPT can break it instantly:

  • First drafts of emails, reports, proposals, announcements
  • Opening paragraphs when you know what you want to say but not how to start
  • Rewriting something that exists but needs improvement

*Immediate value*: The next email you are dreading writing – give ChatGPT your brief and let it break the blank page. Then edit the draft.

Category 3 – Research and Summarization.

When you need to understand a topic quickly or extract key information from long content:

  • Summarize long documents (paste the content or describe what you need)
  • Explain what you need to know about [topic] for [specific purpose]
  • Identify the most important points in [document or situation]

Apply Tier 2 verification for any research you will act on professionally.

Category 4 – Brainstorming and Generating Options.

When you need more ideas than you can generate alone:

  • "Give me 15 ideas for [challenge]"
  • "What are the main approaches to [problem] – and what are the tradeoffs of each?"
  • "What am I not thinking about when I consider [decision]?"

ChatGPT's value in brainstorming is generating a wider set of options for your judgment to filter – not providing the answer.

Category 5 – Preparing for Conversations and Situations.

Using ChatGPT as a thinking partner before important interactions:

  • "Help me prepare for a conversation where I need to [situation]"
  • "What questions should I expect and how should I be thinking about them?"
  • "Play devil's advocate against my position on [topic] so I can prepare for pushback"

*Immediate value*: Before any important meeting, spend 10 minutes with ChatGPT preparing. You will walk in better prepared than without it.

Building your personal use case list.

After trying each of the five categories, identify which two or three generate the most value for your specific work. Focus your early practice there – consistency in a few high-value areas builds skill faster than occasional experimentation across many.

Jamie Practice Lab

Before moving to the quiz, complete this short applied exercise:

  1. Write one realistic ChatGPT prompt that applies the main idea from Five Everyday Tasks Where ChatGPT Delivers Immediate Value to your own work, learning, or daily life.
  2. Add one safety or verification step you would take before acting on ChatGPT's response.
  3. Revise the prompt once to include clearer context, constraints, or success criteria.

Instructor check: A strong answer should show practical use, human review, and awareness that ChatGPT output is assistance – not automatic truth or professional advice.
