Lesson Objectives

By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:

  • Explain what Pro Search adds to standard Perplexity search
  • Apply each major Focus mode to the research tasks it is designed for
  • Know when each Focus mode is appropriate vs. when standard search is better
  • Apply appropriate verification standards for each source pool

**Feature Availability Notice**: Pro Search and Focus modes are Perplexity Pro features. Verify current availability and feature details at perplexity.ai. Features and interface may have changed since course creation.

What Pro Search adds to standard search.

Standard Perplexity search retrieves sources and synthesizes an answer in a single pass. Pro Search performs multi-step research – it:

  1. Analyzes the question to identify what sub-questions need to be answered
  2. Runs multiple searches for different aspects of the question
  3. Synthesizes findings across all searches into a comprehensive response
  4. Provides more detailed citations and deeper source coverage

Pro Search is significantly more thorough – and takes longer than standard search. Use it for research tasks where comprehensive coverage matters, not for quick fact lookups.

When to use Pro Search vs. standard search.

Use Pro Search for:

  • Complex research questions with multiple angles
  • Competitive landscape analysis
  • Comprehensive literature review on a topic
  • Any research where missing an important source is costly

Use standard search for:

  • Quick fact verification
  • Definitions and basic explanations
  • Simple comparative questions
  • Time-sensitive queries where speed matters

Focus Modes – specialized source targeting.

Focus modes constrain Perplexity's search to a specific pool of sources, producing results specifically relevant to that source type.

Academic Focus. Best for: scholarly research, finding peer-reviewed publications, academic literature review, scientific and medical research questions. Source pool: academic journals, research papers, scholarly publications. Verification note: Even with Academic Focus, verify that cited papers are published in peer-reviewed journals and read abstracts (and full papers when stakes are high) rather than relying only on Perplexity's synthesis.

Writing Focus. Best for: getting writing-specific resources – style guidance, editorial perspectives, writing process information. Source pool: writing-focused publications, editorial resources, style guides.

Video Focus. Best for: finding video explanations, tutorials, and visual content on a topic. Source pool: video content platforms.

Reddit Focus. Best for: understanding community perspectives, real-user experiences, and what practitioners actually say about tools, products, and approaches. Source pool: Reddit communities. Verification note: Reddit content is user-generated and unverified. Reddit Focus is excellent for directional understanding of community perspectives – not for factual claims requiring authoritative sourcing.

Wolfram Alpha Focus. Best for: mathematical calculations, data lookups, scientific computations, and quantitative questions. Source pool: Wolfram Alpha's computational knowledge engine.

Choosing the right Focus mode.

Match the Focus mode to the type of authority relevant to your question:

  • "What does peer-reviewed research show?" -> Academic
  • "What do practitioners actually experience using X?" -> Reddit
  • "What is the mathematical result of Y?" -> Wolfram Alpha
  • "What writing style guidance exists for Z?" -> Writing
  • Default for most professional research: standard search or Pro Search
