What is Perplexity AI?

Perplexity AI is an AI-powered research and search tool developed by Perplexity AI, Inc. Unlike traditional AI chatbots that answer questions from information learned during training, Perplexity searches the current web in real time and synthesizes what it finds into a readable answer – with citations showing where the information came from.

This makes Perplexity distinctively useful for:

• Questions that need current, up-to-date information
• Research that requires knowing your sources
• Fact-checking and verification tasks
• Any topic where the answer changes over time

How Perplexity differs from search engines.

A search engine (like Google) returns a list of links – you click through and read the sources yourself. Perplexity reads those sources for you and synthesizes a summary answer – with links to the original sources so you can verify.

How Perplexity differs from traditional AI chatbots.

A traditional AI chatbot (like a standard large language model) answers from its training data. It may not know about events after its training cutoff, and it often cannot tell you where a claim came from. Perplexity searches the web in real time and attributes sources – you can see where each piece of information originated.

Accessing Perplexity AI.

Perplexity AI is accessible at perplexity.ai. Basic search functionality is available without creating an account – you can start searching immediately. Creating a free account provides additional features including search history and the ability to follow up on previous searches.

The basic Perplexity interface.
