Lesson Content

A toolkit you actually use beats an exhaustive list you forget.

This lesson is about consolidation – taking everything from this course and selecting the subset that applies to your specific life and work. A focused personal toolkit with ten things you use every day is more valuable than a reference document with forty things you look at once.

The three-tier toolkit structure.

Organize your personal toolkit into three tiers:

Tier 1 – Daily defaults (2-4 items): The things you apply to nearly every prompt. These become second nature. Examples: "Skip the preamble," your standard format preference, your role framing for your main use case.

Tier 2 – Task-specific commands (5-8 items): The patterns you reach for when doing specific types of work. For a job seeker: interview prep commands, resume tailoring workflow. For a manager: planning commands, review patterns. For a learner: field map technique, self-testing prompts.

Tier 3 – Special occasion patterns (4-6 items): The high-value patterns you use for important tasks but not every day. Pre-mortem prompting, steelmanning, multi-document comparison, assumption-surfacing for complex decisions.

What your toolkit document should contain.

For each command or pattern in your toolkit, record:

  • The pattern name (so you can refer to it mentally)
  • The exact prompt text or template (so you can copy-paste or reconstruct it)
  • When to use it (one sentence)
  • An example from your own work (if you have one)

Your current interface settings to document.

In addition to command patterns, your toolkit should record your current configuration:

  • Your Custom Instructions (or the draft you are working toward)
  • Which Projects you have active and what each is for
  • Any keyboard shortcuts you have learned
  • Your preferred output formats for your most common task types

Keeping your toolkit current.

Your toolkit is a living document. Review it every month or whenever you notice you are getting consistently mediocre results from a prompt type you use frequently. When you discover a new pattern that works well, add it. When something stops being relevant to your current work, remove it. A leaner, current toolkit is better than a comprehensive, stale one.

The compound effect of a good toolkit.

The value of a personal toolkit compounds over time. Every task that goes faster because you applied the right pattern, every conversation that stayed on track because your Custom Instructions were calibrated, every project that built on prior work because Projects was set up – these small improvements accumulate into a significant productivity difference over months and years.

The difference between a power user and a casual user is not usually intelligence or access – it is the intentional accumulation of these small, repeatable improvements.

Practical Example

A student in this course works as a marketing manager. Here is a condensed version of her personal toolkit after completing this course:

Tier 1 – Daily defaults:

  • Always: "Skip the preamble."
  • Always: "Act as a direct B2B marketing writer."
  • Format: "Use bullets for lists; prose for explanations."

Tier 2 – Task-specific:

  • For drafting: [her five-component prompt template for marketing emails]
  • For reviewing: "Review this from the audience's perspective – what would land badly?"
  • For planning: "Decompose this into phases before we write any details."
  • For research synthesis: [her paste-and-synthesize template with source labels]

Tier 3 – Special occasion:

This toolkit takes her 15 minutes to maintain per month and represents a significant cumulative time savings in her daily work.

Lesser-Known Tip

Share your toolkit with a colleague who also uses Claude. Seeing how someone with different tasks and goals has configured their toolkit often surfaces patterns you had not thought of – and comparing notes on what works is one of the fastest ways to improve your own practice. Pair learning accelerates the toolkit development process significantly.

Safety Notes

Your toolkit document may contain sensitive professional information – your Custom Instructions, your Project descriptions, examples from your work. Store it in the same way you would store any sensitive professional reference document: somewhere secure, not in a public or shared location you do not control.

Practice Task

This week, build your personal Claude toolkit document using the three-tier structure. For Tier 1, choose the two or three command patterns you want to apply to every Claude interaction going forward. For Tier 2, identify the five task types you use Claude for most frequently and record the best prompt approach for each. For Tier 3, select four high-value patterns for important, less frequent tasks. Write your current Custom Instructions draft (even if not yet live in your account). Review the document one week later and update anything that did not perform as expected.
